O.K.! First year was a bit of a write-off, though some made a very good effort. Second year was a rain out. That means 2008 is going to be the year for Schneider racing at Kingston!!!

Glenn?
Laddie?
Martin?
Louis?
Keith?
Werner?
Wilton?
Piker?

Who else?

If/when we make this happen it will be VERY cool. And don't feel you need to have a "dedicated float plane" for this occation. All flying boats can fly from and land on grass. All float planes can be converted to wheels. These aircraft make some VERY interesting and fun subjects. Let's put a little effort into making 2008 the year for Schneider racing and we'll all have a great time with a bunch of cool airplanes.

I am in for sure ... I mean ... I will start working on it before Christmas....err. I love Pike's annual push to keep us motivated :)

Schneider 2006, I had my S21 drawn up and the bottom fuse built-up.

Schneider 2007, I had the hull glassed and servo installed. First attempt on a wing buil but failed.

On Schneider 2008, I wish to have my red Sovoia S.21 ROW. That means built the wing. Work out the kabing(sp?) and pylon mount motor. Tip floats and figure out CG and incidence.

Let's get started.

Great to hear you're moving ahead. We'll have lots of local (Toronto) float flying opportunities next year.

I'll assume that 06 was a write-off because I won :)

I'll do my best to get the Curtiss ready for Kingston. Gotta rebuild the wings and come up with a more firm float mounting system. We'll see how it goes. BTW, if anyone has a wire bender that will do 5/16ths wire please let me know if I can borrow it.

That was one of the highlights! The dismal showing from the rest of us, and the lack of Schneider flying was a bit of a bummer, but we'll all make up for it next year. 2008 will be great.

As usual, I'd be happy to do what I can to help with your Curtiss. Just let me know.

I have a wire bender that will do 5/16 and higher.

I have my Macchi MC72 ready for the water. I didn't get the test flight in before the cold weather, but it is ready.

O.K. I'm bringing this subject up very cautiously because I have been very inactive in the Hobby for the past 6 or 7 months, but Kingston is right around the corner, and I assume the Schneider Trophy Float Fly is scheduled again.

So, I'm going to try to have my Macchi M-33 finished off and ready for flying this year. Who else is in. I'm sure we can count on Laddie. Glenn will probably be ready. Martin? Have you test flown your's yet? Ben? I know you're renovating....any progress on the Curtis? John W? How's it coming along? Louis? Ronald??? Who else?

If anyone local to T.O. wants a chance at the water before Kingston let me know and maybe we can hook up at the bay.

Ya, my rosy-eyed response above didn't come true. When I look at the Curtiss now all I see is how much space it's taking up. The wings still need to be rebuilt, lots of other stuff to do yet as well.

I'm renoing myself a new workshop in the basement, maybe i'll be inspired later this summer to fix it up and we can get it airborne off Frenchman's Bay.

It should be an interesting "show" at the float fly. My M-33 is ready to fly (though I'm still trying to make it look half decent). Although it's flown before, both flights were eventful. The first flight was at Kingston last year but with lots of radio noise and off grass. The second flight was from water, went well, except for the huge pitching effect with throttle change and the flight ended with the plane upside down in the water after a crash due to radio failure. The third attempt resulted in a cart wheel on the water during take-off attempt that caused some damage. We'll see what happens tomorrow evening.

I'm looking forward to seeing the MC-72 fly. If we can get two or three other Schneider racers flying it'll be fantastic.

Well, another year and another set of challenges.

Attendance was down at Kingston this year and we only had three Schneider racers ready to go.

Glenn was back with his Supermarine S4 that has been a regular show at all three years so far. Glenn has made improvments to the aircraft over the years and although it's been ready he hasn't really had a great chance to prove it out.

Martin was finally ready to go with his fantastic looking Macchi MC72. He was eager to test fly from the water, and we were eager to see it fly too.

I have done a little each year on my Macchi M-33 and this year it was closer to being finished, although I still plan to touch it up and finish it off properly (Ya, I know. I always say that). My M-33 had flown before but the stability and performance was still relatively unknown.

At the field on Saturday I took the M-33 for a test flight and found it to be WAY out of trim. I was able to eventually get it settled down, but there still seemed to be wild pitch changes with throttle changes. I had mixed in elevator with throttle but it still didn't seem right. As soon as I got it trimmed out the power died off and I had to land. I was still unsure about it's flying ability.

There was a bit of a rush to get to the lake because of rescue boat scheduling. By the time most of us got there Martin had already test flown his Macchi MC72. The wind was quite strong and the water was choppy, but Martin was determined. Unfortunatey, I didn't get to see the flight but Martin says the plane flew well despite being out of trim (and Martin not having time to get it trimmed out) and the hydrodynamics was good. I really hope to see this plane fly from water some time as it'll look fantastic. Unfortunatley, the MC72 suffered some minor damage to the floats on landing because of the rough conditions.

After a bunch of us sat around for a long time waiting for the wind to die, Glenn got fed up and subjected his S4 to the elements. The take-off was excellent, the flight was prtty good in the strong winds, and the landing was very good too considering the conditions.

Despite the "encouragement" from Glenn to subject my M-33 to the elements I dicided to hold off and not fly it. Glenn will call this whinning but I was still uncertain about the stabilty and the power set-up, and also the M-33 is all wood, so if it takes a dumping, some serious damage can be done.... right Ben?

Anyway, we were disappinted with the lousy weather (just the Saturday evening winds really), but Martin and Glenn were the Schneider Trophy heros this year. Martin awarded Glenn with the very cool Schneider Trophy, though I feel (and I'm sure everyone else does too) that Martin also deserves a Schneider Trophy for his building efforts and his determination to fly in that wind.

Great job guys!!!! We'll get good float flying weather next year

For those of you who are part way through that Schneider build, keep at it. When you get it finished and the weather is right there's just nothing like it.

BTW, I test flew the M-33 again on the Sunday (from land) and it flew well, though I need to get a bigger ESC as it over heated and shut down early again.
